Update 20/6/12: We’re switching back to the old list for a couple of days as we make some performance improvements, and prepare to roll it out as a default to all customers without low priority

Two weeks ago, we announced a number of changes to the rental list and gave some of you early access to the new list. As expected, the feedback flooded in, so – firstly – thanks for all your comments.

The new list is faster and cleaner, and those who’ve seen it are adding more titles to their list. But it’s clear from your responses that we got a few things wrong. So, we have a plan, which is as follows…

Low priority is staying

We decided to remove low-priority with good intentions, but it’s clear that that was a bad decision. We plan to make low-priority work fully within the new list, but that will take a bit of time to sort out. Hence our next move…

From 18 April: choose the list you want

We will soon start to make the beta release of the new list available to all customers. The default will be that if you currently have low-priority titles, you’ll see the old list; and if you don’t have any low-priority titles, you’ll see the new list. You will, however, be able to switch between lists at any time.

So you’ll still be able to add low-priority titles to your list on the website or on other devices. And on the beta of the new list, you’ll still see low priority titles, you just won’t be able to change a high or normal priority title to low priority.

When we fix low priority on the new list – we will move over to the new list

Keeping two lists live isn’t the best way of doing things, and the old list is particularly draining on our servers. So when we have full low priority functionality on the new list, we’ll start to move everyone over.

See up to 200 titles at a time

A consistent item of feedback related to the removal of the ’show all’ option (changing to a fixed view of 50 titles). So we’ll amend this on the new list to give you the option of seeing 50, 100 or 200 titles. We’re not planning to go back to ’show all’ at this stage, I’m afraid, because activating this for members with very long lists causes knock-on performance issues. A 200 title view will allow most people to see their entire list at a glance, while also ensuring the list is faster than before.

An easy way to move low priority titles to a new list with no dispatches allocated

We know that some of you love your low priority, and some use it to list LOVEFiLM Instant titles for watching online – if that’s you, you could create a dedicated list for this with no dispatches allocated to it. We’ll soon be providing a one click solution to make this even easier. Ultimately, of course, we’ll provide a new and dedicated list for LOVEFiLM Instant titles. More on this soon, but in the meantime, you can find multiple lists here.

Bug fixing

We’ve already fixed a number of bugs, most notably the hovers that disappeared on some lists. Please keep letting us know if you find something isn’t working – we’re committed to getting this absolutely right for you, so thanks again for all your comments…

  1. The new list is really good, alot easier to use and looks alot better.

  2. New list looks modern and see no reason why it cannot be easy to use. Very clear lists. Like it!

  3. I love the new set up for the LoveFilm rental list.

    It’s so much easier to prioritise the ‘Reserved Titles’ list, where you can give DVD’s ‘high priority’ listing, instead of waiting for them to be released.

  4. I like the new way :D

  5. Sorry but prefer the old version.

  6. Any chance of changing the colour of “watch now” for titles that are not included within my package? The current setup with them being the same colour means I am often left going through my lists, hovering over each “watch now” at a time to see if I should leave it in my rental list or move it to my “watch online” list.

    This may seem pointless but I can think of examples where a title is made available to watch online (therefore gets moved from my “dvd rental” list to my “watch online” list); or where a film was free to watch online and was then only available to watch online for a cost (therefore was moved from my “watch online” to “dvd rental” list).

    This would make a huge difference and save me time as I’d always prefer to receive a dvd by post than pay to watch it online, and I am sure many other people would prefer this too.

  7. I like the new list. Suggestion though on the right were the new release are there should a seen button to click so we can clear the list of titles we have seen as there are many there I have watched.

  8. better than the old

  9. Hi there, I have only just started on lovefilm, and I find it really annoying looking up films to add to your list of films, and when you click a film to rent, and when that is done, it doesnt go back to the last place you was looking at. Also when you are looking through the films, you have to go right through all the lists each time, or, if you don’t, then you have to go through all the lists again until you come to the place that you stopped searching the last time, thats really a pest

    James Algie on Tuesday 19, 2012
  10. The old list told us if there was going to be a ‘Long wait’ or ‘Short wait’ for a popular disc – why can’t the new list do this?
    Also I am on a Lovefilm Holiday – expiring in a few days. The old list says “Your account is currently ‘on holiday’ until 20/04/2012″ (note wrong date!), the new list just says 0 discs will be delivered: Not helpful…

    Mae on Tuesday 19, 2012
  11. I like the new way you have laided out the rental list it is a lot smoother and easier to read and I will be keeping to the new way if it is possible.

    Peter Hoehne on Tuesday 19, 2012
  12. Sorry I prefer the old list I could tell at a glane what prority things were.
    at first glance I thought something had gone wrong with my dispaly until i read it. Maybe more colour would help.

    paul on Tuesday 19, 2012
  13. I use low for films I would like to see but not necessarily at the moment
    because they are on the list I won’t forget about them, normal means I will take what you send (suprise me) high means I want to see that now , why change it.

    paul on Tuesday 19, 2012
  14. I was happy with the old version except for the fact it lists selected titles alphabetically (that’s very irritating) and that hasn’t been changed in the new version! Couldn’t you have a system where we can put them in our own order of priority e.g. with numbers?

    CELIA on Tuesday 19, 2012
  15. I prefer the old version of the list.

    Charlotte on Tuesday 19, 2012
  16. Very clear, i like the fact that you can prioritize items that aren’t yet released! very good!

    James on Tuesday 19, 2012
  17. I liked the look of the new list but the loss of the information about whether there was a wait for a title is disappointing, as is the rearrangement of reserved list so that it is no longer listed by realease date.

    Nicholas Johnson on Tuesday 19, 2012
  18. Love the new improvements. Would like to suggest another change: a place to click and be able to move films to the top of the list like Netflix in the US. Big change I know but so worth it.

    The films would have to be numbered…one to whatever.

    Thank you for new changes :)

    Mariela on Tuesday 19, 2012
  19. Much better, love that you can change from DVD to Blu Ray and losing the low priority is a huge step forward…please don’t go back!

  22. Like the new format much clearer and easier to see.

    Ray on Tuesday 19, 2012
  23. Another suggestion: If you put the number of stars next to the films on waiting on the queue it would help those of us that have more than 1000 films listed…by showing the rating we can remember how good or not so good a film was and move it to high or leave it alone.

    Thank you

  26. Much prefer the functionality of the old list. It is clear to see what the priorities are and quickly change them… The only change I would suggest to the old list is the ability to sort by title to see if you have a blue ray and dvd ordered that are the same… Please leave the old list.. Love it…

  27. loads better the new way, much easier. keep it like that please

    m speirs on Tuesday 19, 2012
  28. Like Green for the high priority, Don’t like grey for normal choose another colour. Grey ugh !!

    Scott on Tuesday 19, 2012
  29. Instead of going more towards Blockbusters website which is far better, your moving even further away from it. What is wrong with you people? How exactly is this going to make it easier to priortise what you want??? RUBBISH!

    A Signh on Tuesday 19, 2012
  30. I love the new version

    Its cleaner & loads faster
    Its much easier to check if a DVD title i have seleced is available on BD, & so much easier to switch from DVD to BD

    Its also great to be able to prioritise reserved titles, so that they go straight into high priority the minute they are released

    sooo much better

    Labpig on Tuesday 19, 2012

  34. Why make something that is effective less effective. Keep it simple. The original is better.

    Glyn on Tuesday 19, 2012
  35. seems quicker and clearer personally I see no need for low priorty list. High and normal is quite adequate.

    Cyril Stringer on Tuesday 19, 2012

  39. I love the new look. About time it had an update.

    Ian on Tuesday 19, 2012
  41. Hi there, if it makes things easier for you, to make it easier for me, then by all means change the system, as long as its not an every month thing. things change, its just how people react to change thats sometimes a problem. The change is not so bad for me as I have just joined, and I haven’t got used to the way things were on here, but the change doesn’t seem to be all that different, and as I said earlier, if it makes things easier for you to delivery the goods, then so be it

    James Algie on Tuesday 19, 2012
  42. I love it. Its very good well done. Thanks

  45. I like it. It works well, looks simple and clear. Stick with it.

    Gary Ingrey on Tuesday 19, 2012
  46. Well done! It looks like you’ve all been working hard. Here’s my feedback:
    1. Prefer old list for colour, new list is bland;
    2. Like the Priority functionality on ‘reserved titles’ on the new list;
    3. Prefer old list where the dvd ads are on the left hand side;
    4. Prefer old list for quick links (eg Need Help?) being visible on the left hand side;
    5. Prefer old list for all list names being visible at once;
    6. Prefer old list for all list names having a rollover background colour when it’s highlighted;
    7. Prefer old list for colours red (high), orange (medium) which will be ‘normal’, again the new list is a bit bland;
    8. Prefer old list for line appearing through dvd title when I hover over ‘remove’. This may not be possible with the dvd dropdown option attached to the new functionality;
    9. Prefer new list for moving dvd titles between lists. Like that it’s instant;
    10. Prefer old list for moving dvd titles between lists – you can move multiple titles in one go.
    I think most of this list is cosmetic work. The new list is good, just too bland. Hope this helps. Keep up the good work!

    Paula on Tuesday 19, 2012
  47. Might take a bit of getting used to but simple enough

    Donald Stewart on Tuesday 19, 2012
  48. Only shows 3 lists. I have more and I hate drop down menus. If you make it so all lists show (like with the old view) it would be a whole lot better.
